' The Society of the Spectacle is] about not just the clamor of images but also the silence of power, a silence which, since the seventies, has become deafening.' - McKenzie Wark 'In Society of the Spectacle, Debord sets out his best-known statement of how the categories of capitalism colonise everyday life to such an extent that we can barely imagine an existence beyond them.' - Sydney Review of Books From its publication amid the social upheavals of the 1960's up to the present, the volatile theses of this book have decisively transformed debates on the shape of modernity, capitalism, and everyday life. Few works of political and cultural theory have been as enduringly provocative. An essential text, and the main theoretical work of the Situationists. 'Guy Debord is a time bomb, and a difficult one to defuse.' - Michael L wyįirst published in 1967, Guy Debord's stinging revolutionary critique of contemporary society, The Society of the Spectacle has since acquired a cult status. 'Never before has Debord's work seemed quite as relevant as it does now' - The Guardian 'The Debordian analysis of modern life resonates more deeply and darkly than perhaps even its creator thought possible.' - The New Yorker

Devine's cut: public memory and the politics of martyrdom.A nightmarish silhouette: racialization and the long exposure of transition.
Nacho, to the locals) was my first instinct. Maxfield wrote this past weekend (had to…it was torture…) before I could pick a book for this list. I am quite confident that I’d make a decent hand on a sheep farm, based solely on my dozen rereads of this story that is so frigging uplifting it is my go-to book when I’m feeling blue. Her Scrap Metal is a love letter to the Isle of Arran, as much as to Nichol and Cameron, the heroes of this terrific book. Whether she takes you to an oil rig in the North Sea or the Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, you can taste the air in your mouth. Whether their books are based on actual places, post-apocalyptic futures, or imaginary planets, I remember the “Where” almost as much as the “Who” when I think of these stories. These authors create living, breathing worlds that burst with life or stink with rot. Ok, maybe not so much with the zombie apocalypse one. When I finish reading one of these marvelous books, I want to hop online, book a ticket on the next plane out, and just go there. Their words bring me the sights, the sounds, the smells even, of the worlds they create with such precision and care that settings of their books become characters in their own rights. (Who am I kidding? This should be #1 on the list!)īut there are a handful of authors I read because they transport me. For the stories that are still new and fresh in a genre that can sometimes feel jaded. I read M/M romance for a hundred reasons. Then Ezra stepped back without ever acknowledging that anything happened between them and Emery left town. Ezra was Emery's best friend all through school, his first crush, and his first kiss. But one old friend is determined to get Emery out from behind the cemetery's iron gates.Ĭrafty, delicate Ezra Bell, who tailors his coal-black suits, knits gloves to warm his cold hands, and couldn't make a plant grow if he tried, isn't someone Emery can ignore. He has no interest in renewing past friendships. Emery Elward returned to Trinity Creek with no intention of doing anything but repairing the farmhouse he grew up in, starting a business, and tending to the graveyard linked to his family's property. I don’t even get a thank you?” He frowned. He grabbed hold of her chin with his fingertips. What did they do again? Oh, kill and loot, or pillage and plunder?Ī hand spun her around by the elbow, and she found herself face-to-face with Joren and those blue eyes. The last thing she needed was to encourage a pirate. “You stepped in my way.” She tucked the brown pouch into her pocket. “Iffin’ ye had that drow under control, then what ye be doin’ at me feet no more than a moment ago?” “Three, elfess.” He pulled her grandmother’s bag of spice from his front pocket and dropped it into her hands. She should thank him, but he was so smug, looking over at her as if she was on the menu of his sexual dining experience. Besides, I had the drow under control, so really, you saved me from the falling crates.” She smoothed out her clothes and flipped her hair back. Ya owe me.” He smiled and held out his rough hand to her. Her heart skipped for an entirely new reason. His features softened, and he bent down on one knee in front of Pepper. Joren didn’t budge or turn around to watch the elf go. Instead, he stepped over Pepper and slammed himself into Joren as he stomped off down the deck. He pays me to carry the cargo, not to hand over ladies to ye.” His chest puffed out, and he set his legs apart, ready for a fight. “What are you doing, Tide?” His voice came out low. Joren stood in front of her, tall, dark, and so hot. “Oaf.” She fell on her rear and looked up. It's a blend of historical tale, action adventure, romance and spirituality. Hawksmaid: The Untold Story of Robin Hood and Maid Marian is written by Kathryn Lasky and published by HarperCollins. It's really different to see the whole tale unfold from the perspective of Maid Marian instead of Robin Hood. She is determined to get revenge on those who have done her and others such wrongs. With his band of Merry Men, Robin Hood gives back to the poor and Marian gets a job in the castle to find where the treasures are stored. When word reaches their town that King Richard is being held for ransom and Prince John is determined to take the throne, Matty becomes Maid Marian and Fynn becomes Robin Hood. Meanwhile, Matty's childhood friends are becoming restless with the oppression of Prince John's henchmen and her dearest friend, Fynn, decides to fight back by robbing the rich. She finds her gift for training and bonding with the hawks her father has raised and eventually will take on the challenge of training a merlin, the true test of her abilities. Matty is a very self-reliant girl who will grow into womanhood as the story progresses. Matty hides instead up in the tower mews where the hawks are kept and emerges after the battle to see her mother's necklace, the Star of Jerusalem, dripping with her mother's blood and dangling from the hand of Sir Guy of Gisborne. "Matty is our only jewel." "Where should I put her?" "In the potato hole." Desperately, Lady Suzanne, is going to try to hide her daughter, Matty, in the potato hole so Prince John's henchmen won't find her. Schneider's mother, meanwhile, was a film actress in Germany during in the 1930s, appearing in the light comedies and toothless historical epics that were part of the Nazi government's propaganda effort. Her paternal grandmother, Rosa Albach-Retty, had been a famous Vienna stage actress of an earlier era. She was the third generation in a theatrical family on the side of her father, Wolf Albach-Retty, who regularly appeared with the Vienna Volkstheater. Schneider was born Rosemarie Magdalena Albach-Retty on September 23, 1938, in Vienna, Austria, and during her early years "Romy" became the shortened version of her given name. "Elegant and sensuous, she had a striking screen presence," noted Schneider's Times of London obituary from 1982, "but despite excellent performances of both comic and dramatic parts, her career did not quite fulfil its early promise." Austrian-born actress Romy Schneider (1938–1982) went from playing Bavarian princesses in frothy historical dramas to working with some of the most influential and daring European filmmakers of her era during the 1960s and 1970s. But even with my ignorance of these things, this book delivers a story and characters that stay with me. People who are better acquainted with his work will find echoes and layers I know that I’m missing. Don’t let another day pass before you grab this brilliant novella. I apologize if my delay in getting out this review has in any way denied you the nudge you needed to pick up this book sooner. It’s been a couple of very busy months around here at Unsettling Reads. Do you have to make it look so easy?! Well done, sir. Besides just selfishly wanting the experience to last longer, I know how impossibly hard it is to pack a big story about an enormously important issue into a book that barely tips the scales at a buck fifty. And as a writer, I have a bone to pick with Mr. The Ballad of Black Tom is a song sung quickly-only 154 pages. It was right about then that I started feeling more than a little cheated that this book had somehow escaped my attention for nearly five years! To heap insult onto injury, it’s a slim novel that barely made a dent in my reading time budget. This is Horror Novella of the Year Winner Weve chosen a shorter book this time as there are only.
